Once I learnt what a Kokedama was, I have never been able to get that word out my head…K-o-k-e-d-a-m-a, I might love it as much as the word ‘ridiculous’ in fact. So what is it about these Japanese moss balls that has us all obsessed?
I got given one as a house warming present that I have hanging above my refurbed Victorian Bath (see how I slipped that in?) and the very fact that its hanging AND low maintenance makes me want one dangling from every inch of ceiling.
Excitingly though, the Japanese influence into our décor and lifestyle trends is more than just a few hanging plants and sushi platters. For a few years now we have seen ceremonial tea, sake and dining rituals being integrated into homeware and décor trends. Origami in all its forms has also been integrated steadily into lighting and furniture designs, across an immense range of materials, giving true power to the art of folding. Sleek forms and a natural colour palette; bring soothing order to a space.
The peaceful simplicity that is synonymous with Japanese culture, or Zen, is what intrigues and influences us the most. There’s something to be said for the thousands of years steeped in tradition that have influenced the design aesthetic, with Japanese style centered around uncluttered living. What makes the culture most endearing for me is the heady mix of balance, order, ancient customs and natural beauty.
A simplicity that immediately brings a sense of calm to my thoughts.
